Why is Lipitor prescribed?
Lipitor is a cholesterol lowering medication. Lipitor is also known by its generic name, Atorvastatin. Lipitor is in a class of medications called statins. Lipitor works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body. Buildup of cholesterol and fats along the walls of the blood vessels decreases blood flow and, therefore, the oxygen supply to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body. Lipitor works to lower blood levels of cholesterol and fats. This may help to prevent heart disease, angina (chest pain), strokes, and heart attacks.

Lipitor precautions
Before taking Lipitor, tell your doctor if you are allergic to Lipitor or any other medications.Tell your doctor about all medications you are currently using including prescription medications, OTC medications, vitamins & herbal supplements. If you take any of the following medication, tell your doctor: antifungal medications such as itraconazole (Sporanox) and ketoconazole (Nizoral); cimetidine (Tagamet); digoxin (Lanoxin); erythromycin; medications that suppress the immune system such as cyclosporine, birth control pills; other cholesterol-lowering medications such as fenofibrate (Tricor), gemfibrozil (Lopid), and niacin (nicotinic acid, Niacor, Niaspan); and spironolactone (Aldactone).
Tell your doctor if you drink large amounts of alcohol and if you have or have ever had liver or kidney disease.
Tell your doctor if you are having surgery, includingdental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking Lipitor.
Tell your doctor if you develop severe infection, injury, low blood pressure, or seizures while taking Lipitor.
Do not stop taking Liptor without first discussing this with your doctor.
Keep your Lipitor medicine away from children. Never share your Lipitor medicine with anyone.
Lipitor side effects
While taking Lipitor, you may experience some of these less serious, more common Lipitor side effects: nausea, stomach pain, heartburn, bloating, gas, constipation, stuffy nose, skin rash or headache. If you experience an allergic reaction while taking Lipitor such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat or difficulty breathing, seek emergency medical help.
If you experience any of the following more serious Lipitor side effects, stop taking Lipitor and call your doctor immediately: muscle pain or tenderness, muscle weakness, flu-like symptoms, stomach pain, nausea, loss of appetite, change in stool or jaundice.
Lipitor Warning
Lipitor has caused a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue. Although this condition is rare, it can lead to kidney failure. If you experience unexplained muscle pain or tenderness, weakness, flu-like symptoms or change in urine color, call your doctor immediately.
Lipitor can cause birth defects in unborn babies. Do not use Lipitor if you are pregnant. Use some sort of reliable birth control and tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Lipitor. Do not take Lipitor if you are breast-feeding or if you have liver disease.
Before taking Lipitor, tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: diabetes, underactive thyroid, kidney disease, a muscle disorder, or a history of liver disease.
Avoid eating foods that are high in fat or cholesterol. Lipitor will not be as effective in lowering your cholesterol if you do not follow a specific diet plan that is geared towards healthy eating.
In case of Lipitor overdose
In case of Lipitor overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
