Why is Crixivan prescribed?
Crixivan is a protease inhibitor that is used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in adults. Crixivan is used in combination with other anti-HIV drugs. Crixivan is not a cure but it may help reduce your chances of getting certain illnesses associated with HIV. Crixivan may also help to lower the amount of HIV in your body and help to raise your T cell count.
Crixivan does not prevent the spread of HIV to other people.
Other uses for Crixivan
Crixivan is sometimes used in combination with Zidovudine (Retrovir, AZT) and Lamivudine (Epivir) to treat people who have been exposed to HIV infection after accidental contact with HIV-contaminated blood, tissues, or other body fluids. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your condition.

What other information should I know about Crixivan?
If you have previously had an allergic reaction to Crixivan, tell your doctor. You may not be able to take Crixivan. Before using Crixivan, discuss your medical history with your doctor, specifically a history of high cholesterol, diabetes, hemophilia, kidney and liver problems.
Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will order certain lab tests to see how well your body will respond to Crixivan.
It is important that you never share your Crixivan medicine with anyone. Take your Crixivan medicine the exact way it was prescribed by your doctor.
In case of Crixivan overdose
In case of Crixivan overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
Crixivan warning
Many people using Crixivan, do not experience serious Crixivan side effects. However, some less serious, more common Crixivan side effects include headache, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite. Tell your doctor if these Crixivan side effects continue longer than they should or if they get worse.
Some rare, more serious Crixivan side effects can occur. If you experience any of these serious Crixivan side effects, tell your doctor immediately: easy bruising/bleeding, persistent nausea/vomiting, stomach pain, jaundice, dark urine and/or decrease in the amount of urine.
Crixivan can cause kidney stones. For this reason, drinking at least 6 glasses of water a day is recommended.
