Lortab Information

Lortab is a prescription medication that consists of both hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Hydrocodone is a narcotic pain reliever and acetaminophen is a less powerful pain reliever that boosts the effects of hydrocodone. Lortab is prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain.

There are some instances when people should not take Lortab. If you have experienced any of the following conditions, you need to tell your doctor prior to taking Lortab:

  • History of allergic reaction to acetaminophen (Tylenol) or hydrocodone
  • Breathing disorders such as asthma, COPD or sleep apnea
  • Head injury or tumor in the brain
  • Low blood pressure
  • Stomach problems
  • Under-active thyroid
  • Addison’s disease/ Adrenal gland disorder
  • Scoliosis
  • Mental illness
  • History of drug abuse/substance abuse

In addition, if you drink alcoholic beverages on a daily basis or if you have ever had cirrhosis of the liver, tell your doctor. Lortab contains acetaminophen which can be damaging to the liver if taken in excess. Alcohol can also increase your chances of liver damage. If you need to take any type of cold/ allergy medicine, sleeping aids, muscle relaxers, anti-depression medications or seizure medication, get your doctor’s approval before taking them. Taking these types of medications can slow your breathing and make you become increasingly tired due to the hydrocodone.

It is extremely important to never share your Lortab with anyone. Take Lortab exactly as it was prescribed for you. You should never take more Lortab than was prescribed for you nor in larger quantities than it was prescribed. If you notice that Lortab no longer seems to be as effective as it once was, please tell your doctor. Your doctor may need to adjust your dosage.

While taking Lortab you may notice some side effects. Below you will find a list of the more common and less common Lortab side effects. If you experience any of the more serious side effects or if you experience any other side effects that are troubling, seek the help of your doctor.

Vicodin Pain Medication

Everybody, from time to time, feels physical pain. Pain can rear its ugly in many different ways. Pain can be sharp or dull and can last for a short period of time or for hours. To some extent, pain can be a good thing. If people could not feel pain, they could hurt themselves without knowing it. Sometimes pain is a sign that something is wrong within our bodies. For a lot of people, pain can be manageable. In some instances, people experience chronic pain for a prolonged period of time such as months and sometimes even years.

If you have been experiencing chronic pain, your doctor may choose to prescribe Vicodin. Vicodin is a pain medication that contains both Acetaminophen and Hydrocodone. Acetaminophen when used with hydrocodone, increases the effects of hydrocodone. Vicodin is prescribed to treat people suffering from moderate to severe pain.

In addition to Vicodin being one of the most commonly prescribed pain medications, it is also one of the most abused pain medications. For this reason, it is extremely important that you take Vicodin exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor. This means that you take both the quantity that was prescribed as well as for the duration that it was prescribed. Prolonged use of Vicodin can be dangerous and can lead to the following:

  • Liver disease- this is caused by too much acetaminophen in the body
  • Physical tolerance to this pain medication-if used for longer than was prescribed, your body will need more Vicodin to achieve the same result.
  • Emotional dependence- this can occur after just a few weeks of taking vicodin.

This medication should not be stopped suddenly. It is very common for people that have been taking Vicodin for a long period of time to experience withdrawal symptoms. If you and your doctor feel that you no longer require Vicodin, you should be slowly weaned off of this pain medication.

Like with most medications, there are some potential Vicodin side effects. Some of the more common, less serious Vicodin side effects include the following:

· feeling anxious, dizzy, or drowsy;

· mild nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, constipation;

· headache, mood changes;

· blurred vision;

· ringing in your ears; or dry mouth

In some cases, people experience more serious Vicodin side effects. If you expereince any of the following Vicodin side effects, please contact your doctor immediately:

  • shallow breathing, slow heartbeat;
  • feeling light-headed, fainting;
  • confusion, fear, unusual thoughts or behavior;
  • seizures or convulsions
  • problems with urination; or
  • nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice

Percocet Pain Medication

Percocet is prescribed to treat people with moderate to severe pain. Percocet is a combination medication that consists of both acetaminophen and oxycodone. Although both acetaminophen and oxycodone are pain relievers, acetaminophen helps to increase the effect of oxycodone. Percocet is also known as Roxicet, Tylox and Endocet.

Taking the pain medication, Percocet can cause certain side effects. Some of the more common potential Percocet side effects include nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, itchiness, dry mouth and constipation. Other more serious potential Percocet side effects include a slowed heart beat, feeling faint, feeling confused, unusual thoughts and in some cases seizures. If these more serious symptoms occur or if you experience other troubling Percocet side effects, call your doctor at once.

Percocet is a highly addictive pain medication. Using Percocet for an extended period of time can lead to an addiction to this pain medication. People that take Percocet should always use this medication exactly as it was prescribed by their doctor. This pain medication should never be taken for a longer period of time than it was prescribed for. You should never share your Percocet medication with anyone.

It is imperative to tell your doctor if you have experienced any of the following:

  • Enlarged prostate
  • Alcohol use

Many people that have type 2 diabetes don’t even know that they have it. However, there are certain symptoms that are associated with diabetes. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should tell your doctor and be tested immediately for diabetes. The symptoms include:

  • An increase in thirst and hunger
  • Blurred vision
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Slow healing cuts or sores

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease in which high levels of sugar is found in the blood. Types 2 diabetes is a result from the body not responding the way it should to insulin. High levels of sugar in the blood can lead to other problems such as dehydration and causing someone to go into a diabetic coma. Another problem that high sugar levels in the blood can cause is damage to the nerves and small blood vessels in the eye, kidneys and heart. In some instances, this can also lead to heart disease or stroke, because it makes a person susceptible to hardening of the large arteries.

Although anyone can get type 2 diabetes those that are most prone to this disease are people who are overweight, women that have had gestational diabetes, and people where type 2 diabetes runs in their family. The elderly also seem to be prone to this disease because as we age, the body becomes less tolerant of sugars. People who smoke and lead a sedentary lifestyle are also at high risk to develop type 2 diabetes.

If you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes the prescription medication Januvia, may be right for you. Flu Vaccine - Could it Have Serious Side Effects?

To receive the flu shot or not to receive the flu shot, that is the question. With the H1N1 vaccine being distributed by the millions, whether or not to get vaccinated is on every one’s mind. The seasonal flu shot also poses concerns for people as to its safety. However, the FDA has approved the swine flu shot and ensures its safety and effectiveness; just as it ensured the safety & effectiveness of the seasonal flu shot.

There are some who may argue the safety and effectiveness of the flu vaccine.

Many of you by now have probably seen the YouTube video of Desiree Jennings, the young cheerleader who believes she contracted Dystonia just 10 days after receiving the seasonal flu shot. Dystonia is a disorder that causes the muscles to contract and spasm involuntarily, thus causing the body to twist uncontrollably; and have repetitive movements and abnormal positions. In the case of Desiree Jennings, she has difficulty walking forward and her speech has been greatly affected. However, when she runs or walks backward she not only moves normally, she can also talk without any problems.

According to the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF), they are adamant that there is no research to offer any type of proof that the seasonal flu shot causes Dystonia. Because of this particular case involving Desiree Jennings, the DMRF turned to Dystonia experts. According to the footage, although her condition may have similar characteristics, these experts do not believe that this is a case of Dystonia.

That leaves the following unanswered questions:

What does Desiree Jennings have?

Was her condition caused by the seasonal flu vaccine?

And most importantly- Can anything be done to help her?

As with all medications and vaccinations, side effects are possible. The most common side effects with the seasonal flu shot are soreness at the site of injection, aches and fever. The Swine flu vaccine causes similar symptoms as the seasonal flu. However, a group of independent health advisors are closely monitoring the safety of the millions of doses of the H1N1 vaccine that have been distributed across the country. Although nothing is guaranteed 100%, medical professionals stand behind the fact that getting the H1N1 vaccine or the seasonal flu shot can be far less risky than contracting the flu itself. Getting vaccinated is a very personal choice. Make sure you know all the facts so you can make the best decision possible for you and your family.

Swine Flu & Hospital Restrictions

Do you have a friend or relative in the hospital that you are planning to visit? Before you do, you better call the hospital to see what their visitors’ restrictions are. Many hospitals around the US are beginning to put restrictions on the visitors coming to see their patients. Hospital officials say that they are trying to reduce the swine flu from spreading.

Most of the hospitals are restricting kids from visiting because the H1N1 seems to spread very quickly amongst kids. Restrictions vary greatly from hospital to hospital, even if they are in the same area. Stanford University Hospital has restricted anyone under 16 years old from visiting. While a Vermont hospital has decided to restrict children under 12 from visiting. There are some hospitals that aren’t necessarily restricting an age but the symptoms that one may have. In Indiana, visitors are asked to answer some questions and then wear a green sticker indicating that they have been cleared to visit.

The Inova Health System Hospital in D.C. is advising pregnant women that they will have to limit themselves to just one visitor during their stay in the maternity ward. In addition, the hospital has cancelled its popular “what-to-expect” tours for expectant parents. However, most of the hospitals have chosen to post signs asking for people to refrain from visiting if they have the slightest symptom such as a sniffle or a cough. Many hospitals have available hand sanitizer and face masks for their visitors to use upon entering the hospitals.

I think the best thing to do when you are visiting a loved one in the hospital is to use common sense. Before you go in the hospital room, wash your hands thoroughly or use hand sanitizer that is probably readily available at the hospital. If you aren’t feeling 100%, postpone your visit until you are. These restrictions are supposed to end once the flu season is over.

Depression, Depression Causes, and Anti-Depressant Medication

Do you suffer from depression? Depression is one of the most common health conditions in the world. Depression is a major medical illness that takes over both the mind and body. Not only does it affect your thinking, it can also cause physical problems as well. If you feel that it is difficult doing everyday activities or that you feel hopeless and that life isn’t worth living, you will want to seek help from a medical professional.

Depression is a chronic condition which requires long-term treatment. Although there are some people that do experience depression due to a certain event in their life, many people struggle with this illness and their symptoms for years.

Symptoms of depression vary from person to person. Some people may recognize their condition because they have such severe symptoms while others just feel miserable and don’t know why. Below are some common symptoms that are associated with depression:

· Sadness

· Hopelessness

· Inability to do normal every day activities

· Difficulty sleeping

· Feeling weak

· Difficulty concentrating

· Loss of interest in sex

· Suicidal thoughts

Although the cause of depression is not known, many people believe that it is due to either a chemical reaction in the brain, genes or a person’s environment. There are certain brain chemicals called Neurotransmitters. These Neurotransmitters are linked to a person’s mood. Evidence suggests that these chemicals could play a role in depression. Studies have also shown that if depression runs in your family, you may be more likely to be depressed. Environmental situations such as the death of a loved one and your financial situation can play a part in depression.

If your doctor feels that you are suffering from depression he may choose to put you on anti-depressant medication. If your depression is severe, he may also want to treat the illness with not only anti-depressant medication but with psychotherapy too. There are many different types of anti-depressant medication available to treat depression. Your doctor will determine which one will be the best for you based upon other medications that you may be taking, severity of your depression and your family history of depression. Some of the most common anti-depressants are known as SSRI, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. These anti-depressants include Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa and Lexapro. These particular anti-depressants are most often prescribed because they are usually better tolerated and have fewer side effects associated with them. If for some reason you do not notice a change with these medications, your doctor may choose to try alternative anti-depressant medications such as tricylic antidepressants (TCAs) or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Both of these types of anti-depressants tend to have some severe side-effects and are only administered when other medications do not improve your condition.

With the right doctor, an effective diagnosis and the right anti-depression medication, your depression symptoms can greatly improve. Many patients begin to feel like themselves again in as little as 4-6 weeks. Remember that it is perfectly normal to feel sad or unhappy at times because of certain events that are happening in your life. But if these feelings are lasting for weeks or months and seem to be interfering in your work, relationships and life, then it is time to seek the help you need so you can be happy again.
